Listen, the Grateful Dead were the best popular act playing improvisational music bar none. I mean, Phish is fine, DMB is terrific, but the Dead were in a class alone.
For those who are unaware: Many members of the Dead are continuing to make music, Bob Weir with Ratdog, Phil with his Phriends, and Mickey with Planet Drum.
